One of these came by a short while ago, so I thought it was time to slap all I have of the set out there.

That’s a huge Biederer set, it ends up with one of the girls chaining the other to a rock and whipping her. Someday I’ll post it.

Early Barbara Stanwyck photo

As we can tell from the bob, this photo was taken not before 1923, and probably not after 1928. From 1923 to 1927 Stanwyck was in the Ziegfeld Follies, and after staring on Broadway. In Photos taken of by A. C. Johnston between 1923 and 1925 she has a much longer, curlier bob, and the same in photos by Volpe from the same period. She has the same hairstyle in stills from her early films, about 1930. This model resembles Stanwyck in some respects, but it seems unlikely that she traveled to Paris in 1923 just for the small fee that would have been paid to a postcard model. Really,w hat happened is someone on the internet   thought she looked like Stanwyck and thought it was fun to say she is. That is no way to establish an identification.

I will note that the third different scan of this card I have seen, a fact unusual in itself.

The top Photo is  by Lucien Walery, for a portfolio he published in 1923. The second is of Jeanne Juilla, presumably after 1931. Speculate on your own.

A large number of very nice scans of the Walery portfolio have just been posted here, while a more compete catalog of unfortunately small scans is here.
